Jean Du Plessis

A self-taught abstract minimalist expressionist whose visceral works fuse materiality, emotion, and global perspective.

Founded on an intimate understanding of paint expression and the construction of three-dimensional sculptural works, Jean's pieces explore the relationship between the psychology of self-expression, the construct of the work and the individual onlooker.

Using a variety of media including sand, ochre, industrial paints, cement, wood, and industrial metals, he situates his work as a contemporary extension of himself and the visual impact he has on the landscape and onlooker as a human act of creating something that does not exist and has never been seen before. All the works created come from an emotional base, grounded as a visceral act of creation within his canon of experiences and his minimal approach to artistic life and art aesthetic. This mindset has assisted him through time and has become his ethos, his work is uniquely recognisable as his own and as a scholar of abstraction to his core. Du Plessis has been exhibiting internationally and is currently represented by an art collector and gallerist based in Brussels, Belgium. With group and solo exhibitions in Cape Town and Johannesburg, his work is also part of the Listed Redefine Property Group collection in Rosebank, Johannesburg.
